The Matrix Revolutions
They think it's all over. It is now.

In November 2003, the final installment of one of the most successful sci-fi trilogies had finally arrived. In 1999 we were asked a question: "What is the Matrix?" Four years later Revolutions was heralded as the 'one with the answers in', as Neo, Trinity, Morpheous and Agent Smith battled to the death in an epic fight between man and machines.

Despite part two's box office success a few months beforehand, The Matrix Reloaded still received a critical mauling that left Revolutions with rather low expectations to come. On initial viewing, Revolutions was visually impressive but left us somewhat disappointed come the credits. Maybe that's because it's the final chapter in a series we loved and it's sad there will be no more Neo kung-fu, but the truth is more likely to be that the film simply wasn't up to scratch.

Answers are indeed given third time around, but questions are still being posited right up to the final scene, leaving an ambiguity that pleased and frustrated fans in equal measure. The movie begins exactly where Reloaded left off, with Neo (Keanu Reeves) in a coma beside would-be saboteur Bane, whilst 250,000 sentinel robots burrow their way down to Zion to exterminate the last surviving humans. Neo's mind is held by someone in the Matrix and he's trapped in a limbo that looks a lot like a train platform.

Here he meets Sati, a young girl-stroke-programme with a big part to play in deciding the fate of mankind. Once Trinity and Morpheous realise what's happened to Neo, they team up with the Oracle's bodyguard Seraph to infiltrate the Merovingian's underground club and bargain with him for Neo's release. Unfortunately the place is crawling with S&M freaks with guns who can run across ceilings to avoid bullets; a dizzying sequence that brings to mind the lobby shoot-out from the first film. Sadly it's all downhill from here.
