The world's first augmented reality magazine is about to go on sale in Germany. The SZ Magazine, which is a supplement mag for the German newspaper, Sueddeutsche Zeitung contains many images that can be brought to life with the use of an iPhone or Android powered phone, and the AR technology from metaio.
The SZ Magazine is renowned for creativity and innovation, and is an odd choice to be the very first augmented reality magazine to ever exist. I guess AR is how to turn a very dull magazine into an interesting one. Through the phone's camera you'll see pages come to life - images revealing secret images, comic book speech bubbles coming off of blank pages, and even the solution to a crossword puzzle.
"Our technology leads to new opportunities for combining and displaying information from different sources. With imagination and creative applications Augmented Reality can not only be fun, but become a real opportunity for news organisations to present interesting content in unusual ways," says Jan Schlink of metaio.
