Nintendo's next big plans for their top selling handheld has been revealed, and I guess it's not exactly surprising news that it's 3D orientated. Holding the temporary name Nintendo 3DS, games will be playable without the need of any form of stylish eye wear.

Not so great news for those who have saved hard to purchase a Nintendo DSI XL, but on the plus side Nintendo has confirmed the 3DS will be fully backwards compatible with all DS cartridges.

The 3DS is set to launch during the fiscal year ending March 2011, but this being Nintendo it seems likely that Christmas time will be the likely released. Not only do they excel during the festive period, but they're also adding to Sony and Microsoft's competition: 3DS vs Natal vs Sony Move.

More info on the 3DS will be revealed at this years E3, which is scheduled to be held from June 15th.
