Sony Push Japan's 3D Button
New Sets Detailed
Sony Push Japan's 3D Button

Sony have finally given us some indication as to their plans for the 3D era by unveiling the edge-lit LED backlit LX900 display to the baying Japanese audience. The impressive looking model will be available in 40, 51 and 60 inch versions but, as you would expect, the prices are not yet in most of our ranges. The smallest will set you back a cool 290,000 Yen which is the equivalent of a wallet burning £2,150 to me and you.

Of course, if you want more bang for your buck, then why not shell out 580,000 Yen (£4,300) on the most expensive set. On the plus side, all these TVs will come with two pairs of RealD Shutter 3D Glasses and the IR emitter built in, a device required to take full advantage of the technology.

Sony will be releasing other 3D-ready models in June but these will not include the glasses and emitter. The glasses will be on sale separately with a cost of 12,000 Yen (£89) while the emitter will cost 5,000 Yen (£36). In order to fully experience the stereoscopic functionality you will of course need a 3D source to go with it, although the number of 3D Blu-Ray players on the market is currently very slim. Could this lead to Sony fast tracking their PS3 firmware update to support the technology? Doubtful as it'll take a while for us mere mortal gamers to actually be able to afford one of the sets but we can live with dreams... For now!
