There's no denying that 3D is the next step in the world of entertainment. You only need to look at the huge success of James Cameron's Avatar to see that. Let's face it, it's not the deep plot that's making people flock to cinemas worldwide. Video games, however, are yet to really grab hold of 3D and really make those games stand out, literally.
Sony are doing their best to be the first to introduce 3D gaming, with their upcoming stereoscopic televisions and various showcases of existing Playstation 3 games running in 3D. Even the big black console itself has received a firmware update to allow 3D gaming. However, EA Sports chief, Peter Moore, believes that EA's array of sport's franchises are set to be the leader in terms of 3D gaming.
"As James Cameron did with Avatar at the movies, you've got to build from the ground up with 3D in mind," Moore told CVG. "None of the games I've seen have been built that way - they've been regular games running in 3D. The real secret sauce will be when somebody says: 'I'm going to build this game specifically for a 3D platform.'" Obviously referring to Sony.
So, can we expect to see EA Sports games in3D? "Absolutely. I'm not making any announcements, but it's no coincidence that of the 3D broadcasts I've seen in the last two years, I can count the NBA All-Star event in Las Vegas, while ESPN has announced 3D programming - perhaps even a full channel."
"This is reminiscent of where we were with HD five or six years ago. It seems like a lifetime ago now, but you'd go to CES and be in awe of HD - and it was sports games that showed up the technology. I think there's great opportunity for EA to bring sports to life in unbelievably imaginative ways, once we can grasp what 3D means to us."
One thing is for sure, 3D gaming is coming. It's only matter of time before the glasses and the control pad become a familiar pairing, and games will be more immersive than ever before.
