An iPod Touch/iPhone controlled augmented reality drone is to be unveiled at the upcoming CES. The Parrot AR.Drone is a remote controlled quadricopter, the movement of which is determined through the creation of its own WIFI network that your device is able to pick up. The accelerometers on the Apple hand held combine with the an board camera situated on the drone itself to provide easy manoeuvring, adding yet another feather into the devices already full cap.
This gadget comes packed full of, for want of a better word, cool stuff. The piloting system on the drone compensates for environmental elements such as wind and can even use a second camera on its base to complete an unassisted flight alone. If at any point your finger slips off the controller or if you accidentally exit the app that controls the craft, it will simply stabilise itself and come to a safe landing.
Now, to be fair we would have been pretty much satisfied if this was the end of the devices talents but when you throw into the mix that it can also be used as part of an augmented reality game, you can't help but be impressed. Using you iPhone or iPod Touch, you get a view from the camera at the front of the drone and then have to eliminate targets that are presented in front of you. You can even go multiplayer with two drones in action at the same time. Check out a couple of videos in order appreciate its full skill base.
