Amsterdam-based SPRXMobile, are set to take their augmented reality browser, Layar, to the next level by incorporating 3D images.

Up until now, Layar has focused on using augmented reality to pinpoint restaurants or real estate listings. Layar 3D will be the company's first attempts at entering the AR gaming and entertainment market.

Layar 3D uses OpenGL, the accelerometer, the GPS and the compass of the phone to incorporate moving computer generated objects into the real world, complete with sound. With these capabilities, Layar is inviting developers to create more realistic and immersive augmented reality experiences for mobile phone devices.

Raimo van der Klein, CEO of SPRXMobile says "We are very excited to announce this groundbreaking addition to the platform. Augmented Reality is an experience medium, not just a tool or a substitute for maps. With 3D we deliver these experiences. The platform currently facilitates over 500 developers who from November onwards will have endless possibilities to create rich 3D multi-sensory Augmented Reality experiences."

To show off the capabilities, there are several examples over at the Layar website. These include a virtual plane taking off, Pacman playing out in a real life setting and 3D text pointing out buildings. You can see these videos at http://www.layar.com/3D.

Layar 3D is set for launch in November together with version 3.0 of the Layar Reality Browser for Android.

As of today, the Layar Reality Browser is not only limited to Android users. IPhone 3GS users can now download the app from the Apple app store. It's well worth downloading to see what all the worthy fuss is about.
