Austrian startup, Mobilizy, have just unveiled their new augmented reality driving direction app for Android phones.
Wikitude Drive, as it's called, uses the phone's camera to capture the road, then with the aid of GPS, overlays arrows pointing you in the right direction. Just like standard GPS systems, the integrated text-to-speech tells you how far you are from your destination and how long it should take to get there.
The military has been using AR technology to guide pilots in the right direction for a long time now. With advances in mobile phones and AR, it comes as no surprise that it's been implemented into civilian driving.
Unfortunately, it's against the law to use your phone while driving in England. I expect a dashboard stand will be made soon enough, but in theory it's only a matter of time before all standard GPS systems come with a built in camera and AR features. After all, you don't want to use your phone for everything.
