The Blu-ray Disc Association today officially announced the release of the Blu-ray 3D format and gave added information and specs. The new disc will build on the advantages of the Blu-ray format, namely picture quality, and make full 3D compatibility possible across both hardware and software that support it. The disc is also designed to allow the playback of Blu-ray 3D content through the Playstation 3.
The new specification will allow any player and movie supporting Blu-ray 3D to experience full 1080p HD in both eyes. It will also be display agnostic meaning that as long as your display is 3D compatible, you will be able to enjoy the benefits and this is regardless of whether you have an LCD, Plasma or any other output. You do not necessarily have to have the action jumping out at you at all times however as the discs do support 2D meaning that you could buy the discs in anticipation of a 3D upgrade in the future. Even menus and subtitles can be viewed in the new format.
Victor Matsuda, Chairman of the BSA Global Promotions Committee said, "Throughout this year, movie goers have shown an overwhelming preference for 3-D when presented with the option to see a theatrical release in either 3-D or 2-D." He continued, "We believe this demand for 3-D content will carry over into the home now that we have, in Blu-ray Disc, a medium that can deliver a quality Full HD 3-D experience to the living room."
3D in the home is surely going to become more of a common trend with the release of the format. Blu-ray is flourishing very nicely and 3D could go the same way. The only problem we can foresee is the cost of the actual 3D compatible sets. Then again, didn't we say the same about HD televisions?
