It's clear as a Summer's day that Apple are the leading force when it comes to apps and mobile games, so it was really only a matter of time before other leading handsets jumped on the bandwagon of Apple's success. Now it's BlackBerry's turn to jump on the board and hope to ride the same wave.
At the BlackBerry Developer Conference, Research In Motion announced their plans to introduce OpenGL ES in BlackBerry handsets, starting with the Storm 2. OpenGL ES technology allows for console style 3D games, such as the ones we've been playing on the iPhone for a while now. Research In Motion's App World currently only has JAVA style games on offer, but this is set to change. EA Mobile used the Storm 2 to show off the upcoming Need For Speed: Shift. Complete with top 3D graphics and accelerometer controls.
As well as 3D games, developers will also be able to make use of other new functions, such as push notifications, location-based alerts and in-app advertising, and most importantly, in-app payments.
With capabilities like this many developers are sure to bring their games to BlackBerry as well as the iPhone. 2010 could be a huge year for BlackBerry.
