The Eyes Have It
Why 3D cinema is here to stay

Another pioneer of mo-cap technology is director Robert Zemeckis. He'd already made The Polar Express and Beowulf in 3D and his next film, A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey as Scrooge AND the three ghosts, is released in IMAX 3D this November.

Following on from recent 3-D hits Bolt, My Bloody Valentine, Coraline, Journey to the Centre of the Earth and U2 3D, we can expect the following films to continue the trend over the next couple of years: Final Destination 4, Pixar's 'Up', Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3, Shrek Goes Fourth, Ghostbusters 3, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Tron 2.0 and possibly even a 3D version of the existing Star Wars trilogies (yep, George is at it again).

Journey to the Centre of the Earth is one of a number of films leading the 3D revival.

The sheer amount of money being spent on 3D films and digital projectors suggests this time the format may be here for good. Hollywood is keen on 3D because it will make going to the cinema a unique experience again and will bring back audiences who are currently happy just to watch films at home on Blu-ray, while film-makers can fully immerse viewers in their fantasy worlds.

There are literally no limits once everything is up and running. In fact, the only reason 3D hasn't exploded like this sooner is because the technology wasn't affordable for mass production until everything went digital and thus, cheaper. With more and more cinemas converting to digital projection, 3D has finally found a home in mainstream cinema.

This may be a regular sight in cinemas, sooner rather than later.

For those who are wondering: Yes, Jaws 19 in 3D is probably going to happen and yes, the shark will still look fake. Because some things never change.
